Korey Gulbrandson (b. 1973) is an abstract painter based in Portland, Oregon. Working on hand-built wood panels, his practice is defined by the slow, deliberate buildup and removal of material. Wax and mixed media are applied in multiple strata, then carved back, heated, and reworked to create paintings that are deeply layered and intensely tactile.

Gulbrandson’s process is physical and iterative, using heat, carving tools, and scribing techniques to reveal and obscure marks over time. Each surface develops through repeated cycles of construction and erasure, forming textured fields that evoke landscape, memory, and the passage of time.

He has lived and worked in Portland for more than two decades, and his paintings are held in private collections throughout the region.
